Why nobody wants your piano
This surprises people, so it is worth explaining. The used piano market has essentially collapsed. Churches, schools, and thrift stores are turned down constantly and most now refuse donations outright. An older upright that cost real money decades ago is worth close to nothing today, and the cost to move and tune one is often more than the instrument is worth. If you have been trying to give it away for months without a single taker, nothing is wrong with your piano. That is just the market.
Why it takes a crew
A spinet runs about 300 pounds. A full upright can hit 500. A grand can pass 1,000. More to the point, the weight sits high and toward the back, so a piano does not tip gradually the way a dresser does. It goes all at once. That is why we bring a proper crew, a piano board, and straps rather than two people and a hand truck, and it is why we would rather you not try to walk it down the stairs yourself before we arrive. People get seriously hurt doing that every year.
What it costs
Piano removal is priced by the instrument and the path out, not by truck volume like the rest of our work. These are typical ranges for the Elk Grove and Sacramento area:
- Spinet or console upright, ground floor with clear access: $250 to $350
- Full upright, or any upright coming down a flight of stairs: $400 to $550
- Baby grand: $400 to $650
- Full grand: $650 to $900 and up depending on size and access
What moves the number is almost always the path out rather than the piano itself. Stairs, a tight turn at a landing, a narrow doorway, a step-down living room, or a long carry to the street all add time and people. Send us two or three photos by text, including one of the doorway and one of the stairs if there are any, and we can usually give you a firm price without coming out first.
What happens to it
If the piano is genuinely playable we will tell you and try to find it a home first, because that is a better outcome for everyone. Most are past that point. When one is, we break it down rather than landfilling it whole. The cast iron plate inside is 200 to 300 pounds of scrap iron and goes to a metal recycler. The wood, felt, and hardware are separated out from there. Very little of a piano actually needs to be buried.
What to tell us when you call
- What kind it is. Upright, spinet, baby grand, or you are not sure and here is a photo.
- What floor it is on, and whether there are stairs between it and the front door.
- How wide the doorway and any turns are, roughly.
- Whether the truck can get near the door or has to park down the street.
That is usually enough for a firm number over the phone. We confirm the price on site before we touch the instrument, and it does not change unless you add something.
